Becoming a Member
Becoming a member of Stowe Community Church
We are excited and privileged to welcome you to Stowe Community Church! We believe that becoming a member of our Church is a two-way street. First and foremost, we are committed to YOU; to warmly welcome you, make you feel at home and feel free to be your authentic self.
Each quarter, Pastor Dan offers a casual Q&A session for prospective members to learn more about our Church and our Purpose; these are offered in-person and via Zoom. We talk about everything from our own personal experience at Stowe Community Church to “is it okay to wear ski bibs to Church on Sunday morning?”. The answer is YES!
The larger Church community warmly receives New Members twice per year, generally once in the Autumn and again in the Spring.
Additional questions that are frequently asked:
What is a Community Church?
We are a self-governing, non-denominational body, seeking to foster a community of faith where people of all ages and backgrounds pursue spiritual growth. We seek to be a community where individuals commit their time and resources to education, fellowship, and to helping those in need among our Church family and in the broader world. Our members come from all areas in Lamoille County and the surrounding areas, including around the country as part of our growing online community.
What does “non-denominational” mean?
Many faiths are represented within our community. It is not about what makes each of us different, but what we have in common in pursuing spiritual growth and community service.
What does “open and affirming” mean?
For us, this means that all are welcome and affirmed in our congregation, including LGBTQ+ persons (people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions). We believe that God graciously accepts and welcomes each of us as children of God.
Why should I become a member?
Becoming a member is your own personal commitment to the mission and stewardship of our church and outreach programs. Members can sit on the board, chair committees, direct stewardship, and have an active voice in the shaping of our future. One does not have to “leave” a former place of worship to become a member and one may live remotely and join as an active member of our growing online congregation.
Can I join the Choir?
New choir members are warmly welcomed and encouraged. From our original Simmons Tracker organ to our Steinway piano to our amazing choir, music is a special component of Stowe Community Church. In addition to a once-a-month, music-themed evening worship service, there are inspiring musical programs throughout the year.
How do I get involved in community activities?
We gather together at Sunday worship for spiritual deepening, insightful and inspiring messages, and uplifting music. Afterward, please join us on the front porch or downstairs in the Fellowship Hall to meet members, learn about volunteer opportunities and share in the camaraderie of our community family. This is a wonderful time to ask questions regarding our many volunteer opportunities and outreach programs. Each activity allows you to meet and really get to know other members in the spirit of friendship and dedication to giving back to the community and those in need.
Is there a dress code?
Casual and comfortable is the only “code” you will find. Plus, the aforementioned ski bibs!
Are there Children’s Programs?
Children are always deeply and warmly welcomed. There is childcare for children under 4 in our new Nursery room and Toddler play space. Older children are encouraged to stay through the beginning of the Service and the Children’s Message. Afterward, they go to their Sunday School classes now divided by age (K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade). Our community is built on the spirit of family. There are many fun family experiences throughout the year as well. We also have a youth ministry program for teenagers in grades 6th-12th with Sunday morning fellowship time and monthly social, service, and spiritual activities and events.
