Call to Worship         Lay Leader: David Roy
Our long journey is over!
We have danced into the light of Jesus’ resurrection!
No more do we need to fear!
No more will we feel that we are alone and lost!
Jesus lives in our hearts and spirits!
Jesus calls us to be a source of hope and joy for others!

Hymn         “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”     #25

Unison Prayer
Loving God, we are grateful to gather for our worship this morning,
and to be in Your presence. May our hearts and minds be open today
to Your Word, and may Your Holy Spirit flow with us and among us.
We pray all of this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Children’s Message

Reading Psalm 86:1-10
Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.

Preserve my life, for I am devoted to you; save your servant who
trusts in you. You are my God;

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all day long.

Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love
to all who call on you.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; listen to my cry of supplication.

In the day of my trouble I call on you, for you will answer me.

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any
works like yours.

All the nations you have made shall come and bow down before you,

O Lord, and shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.

We are so happy to have Rev. Paul Sangree leading us in worship today. Thank you for being here. Rev. Paul Sangree is the Associate Conference Minister of the Vermont Conference of the United Church of Christ, which is made up of over 100 churches throughout the state who seek to encourage and support one another in our common ministries.  He has served in this role since 2018.  Previously, he was a pastor in Massachusetts at 3 churches for 30 years.

Sterling Pond Hike, 2.5 miles. Moderate.  Short but steep hike up to this lovely alpine pond. A couple of options once we get to the pond, depending on the group’s desires.  Meet at the ‘top of the notch’.

Join Rev. Laura for an easy but lovely 2-mile hike on Wednesday, June 17, at 6:00pm. We'll meet at the Kirchner Woods parking lot on Taber Hill Rd in Stowe and will enjoy a time of fellowship as we get to know our interim minister. Open to men and women of all ages. Questions? Contact Nikki Canalichio at 214-725-0088.

We are grateful to Anne Bongiourno for sharing our June Missionmoment on June 21 highlighting the impactful ministry of Pastor Ouma and the Kenyan orphanage, Nyalwodop School.  The missions committee has a long history of supporting Nyalwodop School and Widows project, going back to when Pastor Ouma began a grassroots community organization in Kenya dedicated to housing and educating children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic, as well as supporting the widows who help care for them.

The children and widows have many needs, but cultural mores limit their abilities to self fund. Malnourishment is a problem in the community with the school needing ongoing funds to support one hot meal a day for the 55 children. Other needs include teacher support, widows support, funding for talented students needing to go to secondary school and capital projects at the primary school.

In 2023 SCC missions supported a small group mission and a group of 5 went to Nyalwodop to plan for future mission trips. On that trip we raised enough money for a new water collection system and new chairs for the school. We plan to return on July 8, 2027 with a larger group and new projects. More information will be available on June 21st for those interested in joining this group. In the meantime, a gift in any amount will help Pastor Ouma to continue his good work with the children and widows in Nyalguga village.  Donation envelopes are available at the back of the church and in the June 21 bulletin, and gifts may also be made online through Stowe Community Church Giving Page(please note "Kenyan Orphanage" in the donation description).

Bible Camp – August 17-21, 2026 9am to noon “Rainforest Falls – exploring the nature of God”  Bible Camp is available for all students from K – 5th grade and for Middle School Students, 6th – 8th for a week of Community Outreach! High School students are welcome and encouraged to join us as Camp Counselors and get community service hours for their time!  Registration and information can be found at stowecommmunitychurch.org.

Musical Notes by Karen Miller

‍ Prelude:  (Jakob Ludwig) Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) learned from an early age the rigors and benefits of hard work.  His father required his children to be up and to their studies by 5 AM or 6 AM.  Thus, Felix became a good painter, had a wide literary knowledge, and wrote superbly.  He was a wonderful pianist, a good violinist, an exceptional organist, and an inspiring conductor.  His musical memory was phenomenal, and he was well known for his generosity toward other musicians.  He revered Bach and his music but also embraced the early elements of Romanticism.  So his music is sometimes in the Baroque style, sometimes in the Romantic.  His "Prelude in G Major' is from an early collection of three preludes and fugues.  This piece is in the Romantic style, and the soprano line carries the lilting melody throughout the piece.
‍ This is the choir's final Sunday of the season before their summer break.  It is their "Favorites" Sunday where they share four of their most popular anthems of this year with the congregation as the Introit, Anthem, Offertory, and Closing Response.

‍ Introit:  "Built on the Rock"
The words to this hymn were written by Nicolas F. S. Grundtvig in 1837 and set to music by Ludwig M. Lindeman in 1840.  It is found in the Chalice Hymnal as Hymn No. 273.  It was later set in an anthem form by (Frederik) Melius Christiansen, a Norwegian who emigrated to the US, became director of music at St. Olaf's College in Northfield, Minnesota, and founded the choir there.

‍ Anthem:  "Distant Land"
A piece by famed contemporary British composer John Rutter, "Distant Land" was written in 1990, shortly after the demolition of the Berlin Wall and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.  It was premiered in Carnegie Hall in New York. Both words and music are by John Rutter.

‍ Offertory:  "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel"
This is a beloved African-American spiritual arranged by Donald Moore.  It has plenty of intrigue for all four parts and is just plain fun to sing.

‍ Closing Response:  "Let Music Fill This Place"
A repeat of last Sunday's anthem and incorporating the well-known tune "Ode to Joy", "Let Music Fill This Place" is a fitting finale to the choir's year of music.  May all members have a lovely, restful summer!

‍ Postlude:  Jacques Nicolas Lemmens (1823-1881) had a profound influence on the world of organ playing.  His legato style of playing, pedal technique, and embrace of Bach's music significantly effected Guilmant, Widor, and the organ builder A. Cavaille-Coll.  He published his Ecole d'orgue, a two-part teaching manual for beginning organ students, that was adopted by conservatories in Brussels, Paris, Madrid, and England.  His lively "Fanfare" is probably his best known organ work.
